 Tracking Animals: From Individual Behaviour to Group Structure 

Animal attached sensors, such as GPS loggers, generate a wealth of data that allow unprecedented insight into an animal’s life. Dr Leu will present some examples to showcase what we can learn from these data, ranging from: how animals respond to their environment and make spatial decisions; how these behaviours affect social network structures; and how these network structures can influence parasite transmission processes.

Bio: Stephan Leu is a Behavioural Ecologist at the University of Adelaide (Australia), where he recently started a lectureship. Previously he was an Australian Research Council funded DECRA Fellow at Macquarie University in Sydney. His research investigates the emergence and consequences of spatial and social behaviour in animal populations. It integrates Animal Social Networks, Movement Ecology and Disease Ecology. He routinely tracks animals with attached GPS sensors, which often provides the basis for his research.

Workshop: Introduction to Animal Tracking

Dr Leu will also lead a workshop ‘Introduction to animal tracking’, on Thursday 12^th of March 2020.  Space for this is limited and if you are interested contact Prof W Pomroy.

The workshop will give an introduction to animal tracking, focussing on animal attached GPS units. It will highlight considerations before starting to track, including about the equipment, introduce the type of data generated and give some pointers towards managing and analysing GPS data sets. It will also present a few example research areas where animal tracking data has provided great insight. Finally, we will discuss your own research projects and ideas.  The intention is for participants to present 2-3 slides of their results as a point for group discussion.  However, those just starting in this area are welcome to attend.
