{"id":1136,"date":"2015-06-23T11:27:07","date_gmt":"2015-06-22T23:27:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/expressivearts\/?p=1136"},"modified":"2022-04-29T15:45:39","modified_gmt":"2022-04-29T03:45:39","slug":"massey-tutors-second-film-to-appear-in-nziff-new-zealands-best-competition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/expressivearts\/2015\/06\/23\/massey-tutors-second-film-to-appear-in-nziff-new-zealands-best-competition\/","title":{"rendered":"Massey Tutor\u2019s second film to appear in NZIFF New Zealand\u2019s Best Competition"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Madam Black (2015)<\/em>, a short film written by Matthew Harris, tutor at Massey University\u2019s Albany campus, will appear in New Zealand&#8217;s Best Competition at the\u00a0<em>New Zealand International Film Festival\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"\/\/1\/\">on Saturday 25th July, 6:15pm<\/a>\u00a0at Sky City Theatre.<\/p>\n<p>Described by selector Christine Jeffs as a \u201csweet and quirky tale which abounds with charm and humour\u201d, the film tells the story of a wayward glamour photographer who runs over a child\u2019s pet and is forced to fabricate a story about its disappearance.<\/p>\n<p>The film is directed by Ivan Barge and set on Auckland\u2019s North Shore, and it recently had its world premiere at the Chinese Theatre in Hollywood at the\u00a0<em>Dances With Films<\/em>\u00a0festival, where it won the Industry Award and an honourable mention in the Competition Shorts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s great to have the New Zealand premiere so soon after the international release,\u201d Harris says, \u201cand the New Zealand\u2019s Best event is a great occasion which always has a sell-out crowd \u2013 it really shows the public appetite for short-form storytelling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The popularity of the NZIFF competition and of other short film festivals around the country, he likens to the recent trend in\u00a0<em>hors d&#8217;oeuvres<\/em>\u00a0style dining: \u201cSeeing half a dozen short films is like the tapas of movie-going. Taking slices of life from different plates can be incredibly filling, and it encourages more conversation because you\u2019re not locked into one long narrative. They\u2019re great to go to with friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is Harris\u2019 second appearance in the NZIFF NZ\u2019s Best line-up.
