Here\u2019s a snapshot of some of the research that\u2019s come out of the School in the first four months of 2016.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Three staff books!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Pansy Duncan had a book published: <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.routledge.com\/The-Emotional-Life-of-Postmodern-Film-Affect-Theorys-Other\/Duncan\/p\/book\/9781138955066\" target=\"_blank\">The Emotional Life of Postmodern Film<\/a><\/em>. She also wrote the introduction: \u00a0\u2018Introduction: Neoliberal culture\/the cultures of neoliberalism\u2019. <em>Sites<\/em> 12.1, pp. 1-29.<\/p>\n<p>Dr David Gruber had an article published: \u2018The extent of engagement, the means of invention: Measuring debate about mirror neurons in the humanities and social sciences\u2019. \u00a0<em>Journal of Science Communication<\/em> 15.2, A01. (February 2016).<\/p>\n<p>Dr Nicholas Holm had an article published: \u2018Humour as edge-work: aesthetics, joke-work and tendentiousness in Tosh.0\u2019, <em>Comedy Studies<\/em> 7.1 (2016)<\/p>\n<p>Dr Simon Sigley had an article published: \u2018Programming (Bi)Cultural Memory: Remembrance, reinvention, and Commemorative Vigilance at the Film Archive, Ng\u0101 Taonga Sound &amp; Vision\u2019, <em>Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture<\/em> 16.1 (2016). <a href=\"http:\/\/reconstruction.eserver.org\/Issues\/161\/Sigley.shtml\">http:\/\/reconstruction.eserver.org\/Issues\/161\/Sigley.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Dr Philip Steer had an essay published: \u2018Colonial Gothic\u2019, in <em>The World Novel until 1950<\/em>, ed. Ralph Crane, Jane Stafford, and Mark Williams (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2016).<\/p>\n<p><strong><br \/>\nStaff presentations both local and international <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dr Kevin Glynn presented: \u2018Coste\u00f1o Media: Struggles for the Meanings of Blackness and Indigeneity on Nicaragua\u2019s Caribbean Coast\u2019, at \u2018The Meaning of Blackness II\u2019, International Conference, University of Costa Rica, 15 &#8211; 18 February.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Kevin Glynn also presented: \u2018Proliferating Nicaraguan Mediascapes: The FSLN, indigenous rights and media convergence\u2019, at the Association of American Geographers (AAG) Annual conference, San Francisco, USA, 29 March &#8211; 2 April.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Alex Bevan presented: \u2018Unglamorous Work: Media Labor&#8217;s Discontents\u2019 and was a panel chair at the \u2018Society for Cinema and Media Studies Conference\u2019, Atlanta, USA, 30 March &#8211; 3 April.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Thom Conroy and Dr Ingrid Horrocks were panellists at the <a href=\"https:\/\/ruapehuwritersfestival.nz\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ruapehu Writer\u2019s Festival<\/a>, Ohakune, 17 &#8211; 21 March. Thom spoke on a panel on \u2018Fiction and Biography\u2019 and Ingrid on one on \u2018The Desert Road\u2019, and on a special panel convened to discuss her forth-coming co-edited collection: <em>Extraordinary Anywhere: Essays on Place from Aotearoa New Zealand<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>and <\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>The School hosted presentations on various campuses as part of the W.H. Oliver Research Academy Research Series<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Friday Feb 26 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Massimiano Bucchi, <em>Newton&#8217;s Chicken. Communicating Science in the Kitchen<br \/>\n<\/em><br \/>\nFriday 22 April \u00a0\u00a0 Nicola Legat, <em>\u201cWill you publish, um, books?\u201d The first six months of the new Massey University Press and how it can support Humanities.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Friday 29 April \u00a0\u00a0 Leleiga Taito, <em>An in-depth ethnographic study of the values, communication norms and safety attitudes of snowboarders. \u00a0<\/em>This was part of her BC Honours Research. \u00a0Ms Taito received a GNS Science Scholarship and a College Summer Scholarship to produce a detailed written report and a series of video outputs.<\/p>\n<p>Friday 6 May\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Kyle Powys Whyte, <em>Indigenous Peoples and Climate Change: Basic Issues. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Tthe full programme and recordings of some of the seminars are available on the School of English and Media Studies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.massey.ac.nz\/massey\/learning\/departments\/school-english-media-studies\/news\/research-seminars.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We\u2019ve been busy.
