{"id":399,"date":"2014-05-02T03:55:26","date_gmt":"2014-05-02T03:55:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/expressivearts\/?p=399"},"modified":"2014-05-13T22:13:17","modified_gmt":"2014-05-13T22:13:17","slug":"student-documentary-makers-head-to-international-forum-in-melbourne","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/expressivearts\/2014\/05\/02\/student-documentary-makers-head-to-international-forum-in-melbourne\/","title":{"rendered":"Student documentary makers head to international forum in Melbourne"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two student documentary filmmakers from the School of English &amp; Media Studies have been sponsored by the World Heart Federation to fly to Melbourne this weekend for the Youth Take Action Workshop at the World Congress of Cardiology.<\/p>\n<p>Janaya Soma and Catherine Moreau-Hammond (both Massey Bachelor of Communication graduates studying Expressive Arts as part of their BC Honours year) have been filming a documentary about the \u2018Smokefree It\u2019s My Life\u2019 youth activism project, under the supervision of English &amp; Media Studies staffmembers Dr Radha O&#8217;Meara and Dr Elspeth Tilley.\u00a0 Janaya has also been heavily involved in research and event management for the project, and has just had her writing about the project published in <em>Tearaway Magazine<\/em> (see her story at <a title=\"Tearaway Magazine\" href=\"http:\/\/issuu.com\/magazinestoday\/docs\/tearaway_term1_2_2014\/25?e=1842483\/7627406\">http:\/\/issuu.com\/magazinestoday\/docs\/tearaway_term1_2_2014\/25?e=1842483\/7627406<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>The World Heart Federation has provided a grant of US$2000 to fly the pair to Melbourne to share their documentary footage, and insights into what they\u2019ve learned about by-youth for-youth anti-tobacco activism from being part of It\u2019s My Life, with health professionals and other young people from all around the world.\u00a0 While there they will also have the chance to learn from other young people and top health communication experts, and report back to New Zealand on the global youth anti-tobacco movement.<\/p>\n<p>Once they finish editing and post-production on their footage, Catherine and Janaya&#8217;s documentary will be made available as a DVD to school students throughout New Zealand, as a resource for youth activism initiatives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-400\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2014\/05\/Redlight-Rhythm2-209x300.jpg\" alt=\"Redlight Rhythm2\" width=\"209\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/expressivearts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2014\/05\/Redlight-Rhythm2-209x300.jpg 209w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/expressivearts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2014\/05\/Redlight-Rhythm2-713x1024.jpg 713w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/expressivearts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2014\/05\/Redlight-Rhythm2-100x143.jpg 100w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/expressivearts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/22\/2014\/05\/Redlight-Rhythm2.jpg 1078w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Musician James van der Maas was part of the smokefree youth event that Janaya organised, and will also feature as an interviewee in the students&#8217; documentary of the project.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two student documentary filmmakers from the School of English &amp; Media Studies have been sponsored by the World Heart Federation to fly to Melbourne this weekend for the Youth Take Action Workshop at the World Congress of Cardiology.
