However, it recognises M\u0101ori are underrepresented in STEM and under-characterised in food preference studies. Feast began its <strong>M\u0101ori Engagement plan in 2022<\/strong> and continues to develop its strategy to better engage with M\u0101ori in its studies and its research team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feast\u2019s vision is to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>i) uphold Te Tiriti principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ii) increase M\u0101ori participation in our studies to between 5 and 10% by 2026.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>iii) provide opportunities for M\u0101ori researchers to participate in our science.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>iv) engage with M\u0101ori food and beverage entities to codesign research relevant to M\u0101ori.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Progress to date<\/strong>: We have built relationships with local M\u0101ori community groups and iwi through introductions from M\u0101ori colleagues at Massey University. In 2023, our Consumer study database saw a tenfold increase in M\u0101ori membership. We are working with Michael Smith (Ngati Kahungunu\/Ngai Tuhoe\/Whakat\u014dhea\/Nga Puhi) (Kaitautoko M\u0101ori, Massey) to improve our understanding of kawa and tikanga for conducting our research studies, for example how to Karakia food samples before presentation to participants, integrate te reo M\u0101ori into our daily mahi, and show respect for the head (taonga) in our research, especially when using digital head mounted displays or facial sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>To date, we have hosted 5 P\u016bhoro students interns to learn more about Consumer and Sensory Science \u2013 their blogs are here: <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/2022\/02\/10\/seaweed-dumplings-and-spring-rolls-all-part-of-the-menu-for-a-puhoro-summer-internship\/\">2021<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/2023\/05\/09\/puhoro-internship-maori-value-propositions-on-food-packaging\/\">2022<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/2023\/05\/09\/puhoro-internship-maori-value-propositions-on-food-packaging\/\">2023<\/a>. It is currently said by one person but could be said by all to increase competency and engagement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Karakia in advance e.g. before prepping in the kitchen, as it does not need to be done in front of people. Mention when participants come in that the Karakia has been said in advance of their session. It can be a song, any song. T\u0101iki e! \/ <em>Bind us together as a group to be useful to each other<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Use Te reo greetings as people arrive at the facility.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use the Te reo definition cards displayed in our training room, more will be added monthly as an initiative to encourage greeting colleagues and research participants with Kia ora, Ata marie, Morena.
