{"id":674,"date":"2021-09-02T22:29:30","date_gmt":"2021-09-02T22:29:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/?p=674"},"modified":"2021-12-02T21:25:29","modified_gmt":"2021-12-02T21:25:29","slug":"flexitarianism-may-have-psychological-and-nutritional-impacts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/2021\/09\/02\/flexitarianism-may-have-psychological-and-nutritional-impacts\/","title":{"rendered":"Flexitarianism may have Psychological and Nutritional Impacts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#098470\">Flexitarianism is said to be good for people and planet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vegans and vegetarians enjoy a number of health benefits:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background has-text-color has-black-color are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"background-color:#84091d\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-text-align-left has-white-color\">They live longer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-text-align-left has-white-color\">They have lower risks of diabetes, heart disease and cancer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-color has-text-align-left has-white-color\">They have a healthier weight.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Our planet benefits too: Vegetarian and vegan diets emit much less greenhouse gases and use fewer natural resources. Meat production to feed the global population uses significant land, water and animal feed and contributes to pollution and global warming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns are-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-center is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<p>However, many people find cutting out all animal products too difficult &#8211; or they don\u2019t want to. A more feasible approach might be to become flexitarian. They are often, however, ultra-processed fast-food items that are usually eaten with chips and sugar-sweetened drinks. These nutrient-poor additions contribute substantial calories. This offsets any health benefits of swapping to plant-based burgers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"794\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/LikeMeat-Pea-based-sausages-794x1024.jpg\" alt=\"image: LikeMeat Pea-based sausages\" class=\"wp-image-678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/LikeMeat-Pea-based-sausages-794x1024.jpg 794w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/LikeMeat-Pea-based-sausages-233x300.jpg 233w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/LikeMeat-Pea-based-sausages-768x990.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/LikeMeat-Pea-based-sausages-1191x1536.jpg 1191w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/LikeMeat-Pea-based-sausages-1588x2048.jpg 1588w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/LikeMeat-Pea-based-sausages.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 794px) 100vw, 794px\" \/><figcaption><span style=\"color:#4c125a\" class=\"has-inline-color\">LikeMeat Pea-based sausages<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Yet, the \u201chealth halo\u201d surrounding these new plant-based fast-food products could be attracting new flexitarians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"color:#4c125a\" class=\"has-text-color has-small-font-size\"><strong>A health halo is the perception that a food is good for you even with little\/no evidence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#098470\">Consumers need to choose nutritious alternatives<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Novel <\/strong>plant-based meats are not as nutritious as <strong>traditional <\/strong>plant foods like beans, tofu and nuts. A recent study (see below) found that novel plant-based diets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Contained <strong>higher <\/strong>fat, sodium and sugar levels<\/li><li><strong>Lacked <\/strong>important micronutrients.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When comparing specific diets, it found that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Flexitarian and vegetarian diets based on<strong> traditional <\/strong>plant foods were the <strong>most nutritious <\/strong>overall.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Vegan diets based on novel plant-based meats and dairy alternatives<ul><li>were the <strong>least <\/strong>nutritious.<\/li><li>did <strong>not <\/strong>meet daily requirements for several micronutrients.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Plant-based meats had similar calories as animal meats, but were<ul><li><strong>higher <\/strong>in carbohydrate, fat and sodium<\/li><li><strong>lower <\/strong>in protein and micronutrients.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/Nutrition-Burger-vs-PBMA-burger-1024x576.png\" alt=\"image: Nutrition - meat burger vs PBMA burger\" class=\"wp-image-683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/Nutrition-Burger-vs-PBMA-burger-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/Nutrition-Burger-vs-PBMA-burger-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/Nutrition-Burger-vs-PBMA-burger-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/Nutrition-Burger-vs-PBMA-burger-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/Nutrition-Burger-vs-PBMA-burger-500x281.png 500w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/09\/Nutrition-Burger-vs-PBMA-burger.png 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>So, choose carefully when transitioning to a flexitarian, vegetarian or vegan diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#098470\">Flexitarianism has unexplored psychological impacts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Flexitarian diets may appeal to some individuals who want control over their diet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diets that involve cutting down meat carry the promise of better health and weight loss. Therefore, some may pursue flexitarian diets for the wrong reason, that is, to lose weight quickly instead of wanting to be healthier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, when some flexitarians talk about their diet, they refer to meat as a &#8216;bad food\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Flexitarianism is also a difficult diet to follow. Individuals must consistently resist temptation and decide when and when not to eat meat. This is in contrast to vegetarians or vegans who cut out a group of foods completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#098470\">Our project has a clear focus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>We are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns has-background has-text-color has-white-color is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"background-color:#84091d\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Working with the food industry to increase nutritious options for plant-based meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studying the impact of different meat alternatives on health.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Trying to understand people\u2019s motivations for becoming flexitarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Providing consumers with information to make the right choices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The aim is to make nutritious and tasty plant-based alternatives easy to incorporate into our everyday diets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-text-color has-background is-style-wide\" style=\"background-color:#098470;color:#098470\" \/>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Read the study on comparing different diets:<\/strong> Tso\/Forde.
