Creating plant-based products may be an appealing venture to M\u0101ori businesses. They could deliver to consumer desires while addressing human and planetary wellbeing. Making sustainable and healthy foods that tell M\u0101ori stories, and\/or alignment with tikanga M\u0101ori (M\u0101ori protocols) could increase the product value. However, there are few high-value plant-based foods made by M\u0101ori. Understanding why that is will contribute to M\u0101ori success in future foods.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-vertically-aligned-top is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:33.33%\">\n<p style=\"background-color:#098470;font-size:12px\" class=\"has-text-color has-background has-white-color\"><em>Tikanga: knowledge, values, and practices that inform culturally appropriate behaviour. Food can align with tikanga M\u0101ori if it is produced in a way that is aligned to cultural values. Farming sustainably and ensuring the wellbeing of land and water is an example of how food production could align to tikanga M\u0101ori.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#098470\">Land is vital to M\u0101ori prosperity<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Of the 1.2m hectares under M\u0101ori ownership, 9% is suitable for growing plant crops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many land titles are in small blocks. These can be highly productive and have a lot of potential. Of that, $2.6B is in horticulture.\" class=\"wp-image-885\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/11\/M\u0101ori-Horticulture.jpg 602w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/futurefoodscatalyst\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/80\/2021\/11\/M\u0101ori-Horticulture-300x242.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 602px) 100vw, 602px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u0101ori have less assets in horticulture compared to other natural resource industries. There may be opportunities for M\u0101ori to diversify their assets into plant crops. However, new horticulture ventures can require significant investment over lengthy periods. Ventures for plant-based food products may also look risky because it is unclear whether consumers would accept these new products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"has-text-color wp-block-heading\" style=\"color:#098470\">The future foods frontier is an exciting, if uncertain, space for M\u0101ori businesses<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>So, there are various challenges in making a successful plant-based food. If M\u0101ori can overcome these, they may be able to offer unique products. Creating foods in a way that aligns with M\u0101ori values could add distinct value to products. If consumers knew that a product had been made in a way that aligns to tikanga M\u0101ori, they may be more likely to purchase it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is crucial in an increasingly crowded market. Collaboration among M\u0101ori and with non-M\u0101ori will be key to success at the future foods frontier. Sharing knowledge about the opportunities and challenges in this space will unlock pathways forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research by the Future Foods Catalyst team will scope further opportunities and challenges to enable M\u0101ori businesses to lead plant-based food developments in Aotearoa New Zealand.
