Call for Papers

Social Movements, Resistance and Social Change in New Zealand

Two day workshop August 28-29 (Palmerston North)

Massey University, School of Management

Keynote Speakers

Prof. Shiv Ganesh (Massey University) – Activism and the New Dialogic

Assoc. Prof. Campbell Jones (University of Auckland) – What is possible

Recent years have witnessed a revival of public protest and resistance against businesses and governments. Around the world unpopular governments and corporations have faced angry protest, concerted criticism and direct challenges to operations and processes. In New Zealand, for example, over the recent summer, oil exploration company Anadarko faced off against a small fleet of protests off the Piha and Raglan Coast and the Government minister and officials faced street protests over the secretive trade talks. In other locations of course, other governments and corporations have faced more direct resistance. In France, for example, groups of tyre and machine company workers Boss-napped as a mean of leverage on pay conditions, but more broadly political protest season have emerged in European and other regions as well in recent years. All this has again raised academic question about the nature, dynamics and impact of social movements. This workshop invites papers and other contributions that address these questions with respect to New Zealand contexts and events.

The workshop will be based on understanding common patterns of action within social movements and how recent social movements in New Zealand may bring us new innovations and social change opportunities on behalf of responsibility, sustainability and social equality. We believe this will be the first step to build up a research network on the basis of Social Movements in New Zealand.

There will be no attendance fee; coffee/tea, lunches and dinner will be provided. Participants will organise their own travel and accommodation (we will inform you about possible suggestions). We have limited space so reservation in advance is crucial for the participants.

Please submit short papers of max. 1500 words to Ozan Nadir Alakavuklar o.n.alakavuklar@massey.ac.nz by June 1, 2014.

Dates

1st of June – Deadline for submitting short papers. There will be a peer-review process.
