{"id":426,"date":"2024-01-15T07:28:02","date_gmt":"2024-01-15T07:28:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/?p=426"},"modified":"2024-01-16T02:59:24","modified_gmt":"2024-01-16T02:59:24","slug":"amend-name-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/2024\/01\/15\/amend-name-end\/","title":{"rendered":"Amend Name End"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>New phylogenetic analysis supports inclusion of all of the &#8216;alpine&#8217; m\u0101whitiwhiti Aotearoa in a single genus (<a href=\"https:\/\/mapress.com\/zt\/article\/view\/zootaxa.5383.2.7\">Trewick et al. 2023<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:auto 37%\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p>Despite evidence of a deep ancestry of this endemic New Zealand species radiation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1055790320300555\">Koot et al. 2020<\/a>) predating formation of most mountains, there is no consistent support for subdivision of the ~13 morphologically distinct species into four genera. One is sufficient and as a result the name <em>Sigaus <\/em>(Hutton 1897) now applies to all of the species.<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"524\" height=\"651\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/image.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-427 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/image.png 524w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/image-241x300.png 241w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 524px) 100vw, 524px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The process of taxonomic synonymy requires care and attention to the rules set out by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iczn.org\/\">International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature<\/a>. The ICZN &#8220;acts as adviser and arbiter for the zoological community by generating and disseminating information on the correct use of the scientific names of animals&#8221;, and this is essential given the scale of the taxonomic challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Taxonomic revision involving synonymy invariably results in binomials consisting of new combinations of genus and species epithets. This process can present a number of challenges when we reconcile names originally construed in a way that is incompatible with the current taxonomic rules. Quite often authors have not provided all the information that is required to make easy judgements and so some discussion commonly develops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:37% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"567\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/DSC05238-567x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-428 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/DSC05238-567x1024.jpg 567w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/DSC05238-166x300.jpg 166w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/DSC05238-768x1388.jpg 768w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/DSC05238-850x1536.jpg 850w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/phoenixlab\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/48\/2024\/01\/DSC05238.jpg 904w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 567px) 100vw, 567px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p> In the case of&nbsp;<em>Sigaus<\/em>&nbsp;which we infer to have been derived by Captain Frederick Hutton from the Greek \u03c3\u03b9\u03b3\u03ac\u03c9 (sig\u00e1o) meaning to be silent or to keep silent. Latinisation of this word results in&nbsp;<em>Sigaus&nbsp;<\/em>and in the original combination for the type species&nbsp;<em>Sigaus piliferus<\/em>&nbsp;it is apparent that Hutton (1897) had decided on treating&nbsp;<em>Sigaus<\/em>&nbsp;as a masculine. That is useful information when formulating new combinations as is the case with these grasshoppers that including several species assigned to other genera. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If, the species epithet is adjectival then its ending may need to be altered to satisfy the Code\u2019s requirement for gender of the binomials to match, subject to some variations. However, this does not apply if the species epithet was originally intended as a noun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The genus&nbsp;<em>Alpinacris&nbsp;<\/em>was established by Biglow 1967 with two species:&nbsp;<em>A. crassicauda<\/em>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<em>A. tumidicauda<\/em>. These names, and in particular&nbsp;<em>crassicauda<\/em>, are used fairly frequently in zoological taxonomy, and most will immediately spot the meaning relates to thick and tail. &nbsp;During the establishment of new combinations the intent of the original author, Robert Bigelow 1967 in this case, can be very helpful. Was Robert coining the name&nbsp;<em>crassicauda<\/em>&nbsp;as an adjective (thick-tailed) or was he treating it as a noun in apposition (thicktail)? We don\u2019t know because he did not record this in his description, however, the Code comes to our aid.
