{"id":186,"date":"2020-06-22T04:12:10","date_gmt":"2020-06-22T04:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/teaurangahau\/?page_id=186"},"modified":"2026-02-07T12:34:16","modified_gmt":"2026-02-06T23:34:16","slug":"ko-wai-matau-about-us","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/teaurangahau\/about-te-au-rangahau\/ko-wai-matau-about-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Ko wai m\u0101tau | About us"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>We are a specialist centre within Massey University\u2019s business school that works with organisations and leaders to connect te ao M\u0101ori &#8211; the M\u0101ori world &#8211; with te ao pakihi &#8211; the business world. <\/strong> <\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Research carried out by our innovative team of M\u0101ori academics contributes to the aspirations and wellbeing of M\u0101ori people and their enterprises, empowering them to succeed &#8211; financially, culturally, environmentally, socially and spiritually &#8211; in accordance with tikanga.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also collaborate with New Zealand businesses and organisations looking to engage with M\u0101ori business and develop a deeper understanding of te ao M\u0101ori. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ultimately, our mission is to be a catalyst for indigenous entrepreneurship, innovation and enterprise to advance in a variety of organisational settings and contexts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A pathway to M\u0101ori research in business | Massey University\" width=\"525\" height=\"295\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2GHlwR8BztA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:100px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The M\u0101ori Economy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Estimated in 2023 to have an asset base of around $126 billion and to contribute $32 billion in value to Aotearoa&#8217;s GDP, the M\u0101ori economy is a powerful player in Aoteroa\u2019s sustained economic growth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It encompasses small and medium enterprises, authorities, pan-tribal corporate entities, iwi who have settled their Treaty claims with the Crown, and burgeoning social enterprises.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u0101ori business is rising, with 70 percent of the M\u0101ori asset base sitting in the hands of M\u0101ori employers and the self-employed, but the economy is an old one.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established by the founding ancestors who arrived here from Eastern Polynesia. The challenge for M\u0101ori enterprise today is in deciding how to retain elements of this ancient past while advancing in globalisation, digitisation and technological developments.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"613\" src=\"http:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/teaurangahau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2020\/08\/Construction-Worker-Men-in-High-Vis-Vests-Having-a-Coffee-Break-1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-770\" srcset=\"https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/teaurangahau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2020\/08\/Construction-Worker-Men-in-High-Vis-Vests-Having-a-Coffee-Break-1024.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/teaurangahau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2020\/08\/Construction-Worker-Men-in-High-Vis-Vests-Having-a-Coffee-Break-1024-300x180.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/sites.massey.ac.nz\/teaurangahau\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/53\/2020\/08\/Construction-Worker-Men-in-High-Vis-Vests-Having-a-Coffee-Break-1024-768x460.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 767px) 89vw, (max-width: 1000px) 54vw, (max-width: 1071px) 543px, 580px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Projections estimate the M\u0101ori economy will create an additional $12 billion per annum by 2060. This creates opportunity for 150,000 additional jobs, and relies on the mutual development of both economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Furthermore, the M\u0101ori population is much younger than the New Zealand population (34 percent of M\u0101ori were aged under 15 at the last census) meaning there will be significant numbers of M\u0101ori coming into the workforce over the coming years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The M\u0101ori economy needs to be ready and capable of supporting this growth, and poised to encourage these young M\u0101ori onto enterprise and entrepreneurial pathways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through Te Au Rangahau, we hope to make M\u0101ori and indigenous business research meaningful and useful for the good of Aotearoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex
