Dr Matthew Roskruge, Te Au Rangahau (M\u0101ori Business Research Centre) and the School of Economics and Finance at Massey University, has been awarded this highly-regarded fellowship for research titled \u2018The economics of social capital from a M\u0101ori perspective<\/strong>\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Research summary<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Social capital, the value resulting from networking and social connectedness, is a well-established contributor to economic and social wellbeing. However, it is rarely studied using frameworks outside of the dominant western paradigm. This means that social capital measures and activation pathways often fail to reflect indigenous realities, including the experiences of M\u0101ori, limiting the use of social capital to improve M\u0101ori lives and grow the M\u0101ori economy. Dr Roskruge\u2019s research programme will change this by introducing m\u0101tauranga M\u0101ori and the Aotearoa New Zealand context to existing frameworks of social capital. This will create a by-M\u0101ori, for-M\u0101ori understanding of social capital which can be used to enhance wellbeing and contribute to overcoming stubborn socio-economic disadvantages, racism and discrimination across Aotearoa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the course of his Rutherford Discovery Fellowship, Dr Roskruge will use a mixed-methods and collaborative approach to develop an understanding of what social capital means within a M\u0101ori world view. Developing this understanding involves working with M\u0101ori stakeholders to co-create a framework of social capital. He will test this framework under the broad themes of \u2018bonding\u2019 social capital within te ao M\u0101ori and \u2018bridging\u2019 social capital between M\u0101ori and non-M\u0101ori communities. The \u2018Bonding\u2019 theme will firstly focus on how M\u0101ori use social capital to achieve socio-economic success and navigate colonial institutions. The focus will then move to the role of M\u0101ori social capital and infrastructure as we move into a fourth industrial revolution characterised by increased digitisation, automation and globalisation. The \u2018Bridging\u2019 theme explores the connections between M\u0101ori and non-M\u0101ori social capital, with a particular focus on migrant settlement, P\u0101keh\u0101 identity and the connections between M\u0101ori social capital and those of other indigenous peoples. The findings will contribute to the activation of M\u0101ori social capital to improve wellbeing and continue growing the M\u0101ori economy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
