The experts explain how"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some of the smartest people in the country examine the effects of the pandemic on Aotearoa\u2019s future in 400 words or fewer.\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;<strong>Matt Roskruge: M\u0101ori economic impacts and opportunities arising from Covid-19<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The M\u0101ori economy is a wonderful success story and a significant contributor to the New Zealand economy. However, M\u0101ori workers and their wh\u0101nau are disproportionately impacted by the health, social and economic impacts of Covid-19.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>M\u0101ori are still excessively employed in precarious work, vulnerable to changing economic fortunes. Coupled with barriers to economic participation like wealth inequality, systemic racism and discrimination, we get a downturn like Covid-19 creating greater risk to the wellbeing of M\u0101ori wh\u0101nau.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While we cannot ignore the vulnerability facing M\u0101ori in the workforce and their wh\u0101nau, there are some really encouraging signs emerging from Covid-19. The first is the strengths and resilience of both M\u0101ori enterprise and the M\u0101ori economy generally. While tourism and hospitality remain concerning areas, diversification, low levels of debt and M\u0101ori governance and values appear to be contributing to their economic resilience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, there is no point having vibrant and strong M\u0101ori enterprises if M\u0101ori wh\u0101nau are struggling. Solutions include finding employment and wealth creation opportunities for wh\u0101nau, empowering M\u0101ori entrepreneurs and innovators, and finding our own solutions to stubborn social and economic problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also need to ensure that the inevitable opportunities for wealth creation which follow an economic downturn are equitable. Ordinarily, the benefits of that recovery are disproportionately realised by those with significant wealth, and inequality grows.
