A couple of techniques for paraphrasing

Paraphrasing is an important study skill. Learning to put things in your own words will help you understand and remember the topic as well as write better notes and essays.
Paraphrasing gets easier with practice. Here are a couple of techniques you could try:
1) Note down three key words/phrases, close the book/article, then use the three words to re-write the passage. Compare the original to your version; check that it conveys the meaning and is not too close to the original.
2) Alter the order of the idea and use synonyms for key ideas where possible, (e.g. Brown (2015) said…
