Writing an essay introduction

Usually an introduction includes three parts:

  • A broad opening statement that introduces the broad topic of the essay (a couple of sentences).
  • A link to the topic of the essay – narrowing the focus to the part of the topic the question is asking about.
  • The thesis statement: a summary of your direct answer to the question, including the reasons why you are giving the answer you are giving. It can also be a good idea to include the structure of the essay in your thesis statement, i.e. indicate how the essay will be structured and what will be discussed in what order (e.g. “First… Second…” Or “First, I will argue… Second, I will argue…”),
