Effective reading is active reading

To get what you want out the reading you do it is important to be active. Just running your eyes over the page won’t get you far!

  • In order to be active think about the following before you start reading:
  • What is your purpose?
  • Why are you reading the text?
  • What do you hope to get out of it (e.g. a definition or understanding of an argument)?
  • Can you make predictions about what might be in the text?
  • Does the topic of the text relate to any of your existing experience or knowledge? How?
  • Are there any flaws in the text (e.g. the conclusions don’t follow from the premises or the method was flawed)?
  • What are the main points you need to note down?
