Get more out of your reading: Some strategies for active reading
July 15, 2015
To help you get the most out of reading, try and engage actively with the text (rather than just running your eyes over the text!).
1. Make sure you have a clear purpose
– Think about why you’re reading the article and what you want to get out of it
2. Try and make predictions about what the author will say
-From what you know about the author/theory already think about what the author might be expected to say, how would they respond to objections?
3. Where possible link back to what you know about the topic or related topics/theories
– Think about possible links to your existing knowledge or experience.
4. Try and question the author
– Can you think of any objections to what the author is saying? If so what. If not what’s good about the article/book?
5. Make notes
– Taking notes will help you understand and remember and provide a useful resource for revision.
