Some tips on approaching and planning your assignments

Breaking the task of writing an assignment down into smaller more manageable tasks makes writing assignments less daunting and more approachable. Here are some suggestions for how you might start to break down the tasks.
1. Plan
1.1 Set aside some time to read and analyse the assignment instructions and make sure you’ve fully understood the question.
1.2 Think about how you will answer the question, for instance write out your thesis statement for essays. the answer might change as you read more. But it helps you approach the topic if you have an answer in mind.
1.3 Write a plan – write a sentence or two indicating the topic of each paragraph
2. Research
2.1 Read and make notes on the relevant study materials.
2.2 Search for appropriate academic sources. The Discover database is a great place to start.
2.3. Read and make notes on relevant books.
2.4. Read and make notes on relevant journal articles.
2.5. Revise your thesis statement and/or plan in light of your reading.
2.6. Organise your notes to support your plan/argument.
3. Write
3.1. Write a first draft
3.2. Do further reading if necessary.
3.3. Revise your draft.
4. Review and revise
4.1. Get a fresh pair of eyes and advice on how to improve your draft by booking an appointment with a Learning Consultant or submitting a draft to the assignment pre-reading service
4.2. Revise your draft
4.3. Submit your assignment
