A few tips for effectively proofreading and editing your assignments

December 14, 2015

  1. One way to check the structure and flow of your assignment is to read the first sentence of each paragraph (skim reading). This will help ensure that each paragraph has a clear topic/point that links to your answer to the question.
  1. Use spelling and grammar checking tool in your word programme (it will pick up mistakes like long sentences and sentence fragments). Set the language to English (New Zealand) to ensure correct spelling.
  2. Read your work aloud.
  3. Leave a gap of a couple of days between reading drafts so that you can come back and reread the work with fresh eyes.
  4. Find another student to proofread your assignment and proofread his/her assignment in return.
  5. Start at the end and read each sentence back to the start to check that each sentence makes sense on its own and is not a sentence fragments.
