NZ Microbiological Society Conference 2025

Great to see our team making an impact at the NZMS conference in Rotorua in 2025. This was the 70th anniversary of the founding of the society that made this event even more special. Nice work from all our students and great to have the support from Professor Kevin Keener, University of Guelph and Eddie Smolinski, Fonterra.

Celebration for two PhD students

Celebrating Ili Syuhada Mohd Daud and Srinithi Muthuraman submitting their PhD theses. Ili studied the antimicrobial efficacy of lemongrass extract emulsions and Srinithi explored the complexities of biofilm EPS. Well done to both of you. These two students started their studies during the difficult Covid times. We look forward to your success in your oral examinations later this year.

Congratulations to Saili Chalke

Congratulations to Saili Chalke for completing her PhD defense today. Saili’s thesis was ” The influence of Cations on Biofilm Formation of Listeria monocytogenes. Saili is now working for Sanford Ltd in the seafood industry in New Zealand in a role that is related to her PhD study.

Welcome to Bolin Li

We welcome Bolin Li to our research team. Bolin started his PhD on 1st October 2024. His research will be based at the Fonterra Research and Development Centre here in Palmerston North working on multi-species biofilms from dairy farm systems. He completed his Master degree at Wageningen University and has spent an internship at Fonterra before starting his PhD.

Please join us in congratulating Farah on completing her PhD oral examination today. Farah was complemented on the quality of her PhD. She has some emendations to complete to finalize her PhD. Farah’s study was on the control of citrinin production in the production of red fermented rice.

Congratulations to Dana

Dana passed her PhD oral exam today. Her project was an investigation into the biofilm formation of Vibrio parahaemolyticus, a growing foodborne pathogen of concern, particularly in seafood. Well done Dana. Dana completed 4 publications during her PhD. Dana is now seeking a job in her home country China.
