Open Access Week 2023: Community Over Commercialisation
October 17, 2023
This week we’re celebrating International Open Access Week! The theme for 2023 is Community Over Commercialisation.
Find out how open access can benefit you…
Massey Research Online
Massey Research Online (MRO) is Massey’s own open access repository of the research and scholarship of Massey University. Researchers can make their work open access for free (within copyright). Find out more about institutional repositories such as MRO.
Read and Publish agreements
Massey University is part of a consortium that has negotiated Read and Publish agreements with various publishers. These allow Massey researchers to publish their articles open access without having to pay an article processing charge. So far in 2023 Massey authors have published 119 articles (with more to come) with significant savings and increased exposure for their articles:

Open textbooks
Some Massey courses now have free open textbooks available to students. The Library is currently helping to create two more of these.
Find out about free and easy access to textbooks for students at Open textbooks.
Join a workshop
We regularly run workshops on open access for staff and doctoral students. Our final one for the year (for doctoral students) runs during Open Access Week, but keep an eye on our calendar for workshops next year.
See Library classes and workshops.
There are also many international workshops running during Open Access Week. Here are a few we think might be particularly interesting:
- Community over commercialisation – What is community control and why does it matter?
- Support for Open and FAIR Non-Traditional Research Outputs (NTROs)
- Creating space for Indigenous and Pacific research
