2025 read & publish open access agreements cap warning

April 29, 2025

Some of the Library’s 2025 read and publish agreements will stop waiving the article processing charges (APCs) well before the end of this year, so plan carefully if you would like to make your article open access through this scheme.

Wiley, Springer and Taylor & Francis all have capped agreements, meaning they have an annual allocation for publishing open access articles. They are currently predicting that the caps will be reached in September, October and early December respectively. You can keep an eye on cap progress under each publisher page on CAUL.

An alternative pathway to the read & publish agreements is to publish in a subscription journal, then make your article open access through Massey Research Online. This is free, though publishers may impose an embargo period and/or set conditions on which version of the article may be made open access.

If you have any questions, please contact your subject librarian.
