Having trouble opening, saving or printing PDFs?

June 20, 2012

Are you having trouble opening, saving or printing PDF documents, such as journal articles or theses? Try these trouble-shooting tips:

1. Ensure you have Adobe Reader installed and at least version 9
2. Which web browser are you using? Instead of opening it directly, try right clicking on the file and…

  • IE: choose ‘Save Target As’
  • Firefox/Chrome: choose ‘Save Link As’
  • Safari: choose ‘Download Linked File’

3. Try another browser
4. Or try opening the PDF in Adobe Reader rather than the browser. This seems to solve most PDF problems:

  • Click Start –> Programs –> Adobe Reader
  • In Adobe Reader, click Edit –> Preferences –> Internet
  • Untick ‘Display PDF in browser’
  • Click ‘OK’ and close Adobe Reader
  • PDFs will then display in Adobe Reader instead of in your browser window.
