Turitea Library is currently displaying ‘A Sportive, Knightly Battle’ on the 1936 Olympic Games held in Berlin. The items on display are from Massey University Library’s Opfermann Collection, and were published in 1936 or 1937.

The Summer Olympics were held over 1-16 August, 1936, in Berlin, comprising of:

  • 49 nations
  • 3963 competitors (331 were women)
  • 19 sports and 129 events

Berlin had been picked to host the 1916 Olympics, but these were cancelled due to World War I. The 1936 games were seen as an opportunity to promote the new Germany.
