This week is Open Education Week.

What is Open Education?

“Open education encompasses resources, tools and practices that employ a framework of open sharing to improve educational access and effectiveness worldwide”

It comprises three parts, open educational resources, open pedagogy and open access.

Open educational resources have reduced copyright restrictions on their use and reuse, and often come with Creative Commons license allowing various degrees of sharing and reuse. Open Education resources allow learners and teachers to reuse, retain, revise, remix and redistribute works.

Open pedagogy is the concept that learners are contributors to knowledge not just consumers of knowledge. This may include things like students working with public communities on projects, working openly on the web rather than within a Learning Management System through blogs etc.

Open access’s guiding principle is that publicly funded research is publicly available rather than behind paywalls and exorbitant subscriptions.

“Open Education is a movement. It’s about reducing barriers to education, empowering learners, and connecting the academy to the world that it serves…”  Robin DeRosa (2016, Jan 31). Open Education Intro [videofile] Retrieved from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7msF_BN3Jo

Why is Open Education important?

Now more than ever people want to learn. By providing free and open access to education and knowledge, we help create a world where people can achieve this goal.

Who does Open Education benefit?

You! Everyone! Students, and educators alike.  Textbooks are expensive for students to buy, so having open resources makes learning more equitable, and reduces the cost barrier. Teachers can translate, remix and re-share resources without significant cost to their activities.

What is Open Education Week for?

“Open Education Week’s goal is to raise awareness about free and open educational opportunities that exist for everyone, everywhere, right now.”
