New open access publishing option free to Massey researchers

November 22, 2019

Massey researchers now have another open access (OA) publishing option which is free to them, a recent development in the ever-changing OA landscape.

The Library has just signed its first transformative agreements with journal publishers – a new “publish and read” model which combines the traditional “read” subscription with the more recent Articles Processing Charges (APCs) to authors to “publish” their work OA. The Library now pays one fee to cover both functions, so Massey researchers will be able to have their eligible work freely available to all on these publishers’ websites without any additional cost.

The transformative agreements Massey has so far are with the Biochemical Society and the Microbiology Society journals. However this is a rapidly developing area, so expect to see more journals following this model or other variations in future.

In addition, a few of the publishers still on the traditional subscription model now offer discounts on the APCs.

The other common OA path free to authors is self-archiving in Massey Research Online or other specialist repositories.

For more information on these OA options, including a list of specific titles with transformative agreements, see open access publishing or contact your subject librarian.
