Discover's natural language search

Discover, the Library search tool, has a new AI-powered ‘natural language’ search option. This means you can enter a phrase or question rather than the keywords we usually recommend for an effective search. You do not need to declare it for your assignments.

You can turn the natural language search on just below the search box. It uses what you enter, whether that’s a phrase, question or keywords, to create an advanced keyword search. You can see the search terms used by clicking on ‘show refined query’.

Some key things to note about Discover’s natural language search:

  • AI is only being used to enhance your search query, so there’s no need to declare it in your assignments.
  • It may help with your search, especially if you use a phrase/question, but we’re still testing it ourselves to see what we recommend. You could try your search both ways to see if it works for you.
  • The AI being used doesn’t collect information from Discover, including your search terms, saved items, etc.
