New for Massey Theses: Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs)

October 2, 2026

What if your thesis could be easier to find not only by researchers, but also by the systems researchers increasingly use to discover information?

Massey University’s institutional repository, Pātaka Rangahau | Massey Research Online (MRO), now assigns Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) to newly deposited theses. A DOI is often described as a permanent link, but its value goes far beyond that. It provides a globally recognised identifier that helps connect research to citation databases, researcher profiles, academic search platforms, and research impact services.

DOIs make theses easier to discover, cite, and share. Many scholarly systems rely on persistent identifiers to accurately connect research outputs with their authors, citations, and related works. Reference management tools such as EndNote, Zotero, and Mendeley can use DOI metadata, while researcher profile systems such as ORCID and scholarly databases such as OpenAlex use persistent identifiers to link and organise research outputs.

A DOI can also help demonstrate research impact. Services such as Altmetric use persistent identifiers to aggregate attention from sources such as news media, blogs, policy documents, Wikipedia, and social media. By providing a reliable identifier, a DOI makes it easier for these systems to recognise and connect discussion and engagement with a particular thesis.

As AI-powered research tools become more common, persistent identifiers are becoming increasingly important parts of scholarly infrastructure. Research discovery tools such as Consensus and Elicit draw on sources including OpenAlex, Semantic Scholar, and other scholarly databases to search and analyse research literature. While having a DOI does not guarantee that a thesis will appear in AI-generated results, it helps ensure that the thesis can be reliably identified, linked, and integrated into the wider scholarly ecosystem on which many modern discovery services depend.

For Massey graduates, a DOI provides a stable, citable, and internationally recognised link to their work. Combined with open-access deposit in Pātaka Rangahau | Massey Research Online, it helps ensure that postgraduate research can be found, shared, cited, tracked, and built upon by researchers around the world.

Frequently asked question: Will existing theses receive DOIs?

At present, DOI assignment applies only to newly deposited theses. Theses already in Massey Research Online will continue to be available through their existing permanent repository links.
