Library Out Loud

We now have quick access to the four most popular multidisciplinary databases. From the Library home page, click on Article Databases and scroll down to see the links to Discover, Google Scholar, Scopus and Web of Knowledge. Click on the i next to each one to see more about it, including short ‘show me how’ demonstrations.

These popular databases are suitable for most subject areas. The main advantages of each are:

• Discover: this is the search box that appears on the Library home page. It searches most of the Library’s article databases, the Library Catalogue, Massey Research Online, and more – all at the same time. A great place to start!
• Google Scholar: the academic version of Google, searching for scholarly material rather than websites. It is really important that you access it through the Library website, so that the results you see are linked to the journals the Library subscribes to on your behalf.
• Scopus: a scholarly database that allows you to track and analyse citations – an important tool for postgraduate study and research.
• Web of Knowledge: another scholarly citation database for advanced study and research, with slightly different coverage to Scopus.

These databases cover most areas very well. For comprehensive coverage of a topic, you may also want to look at specific article databases in your subject area, also available on the Article Databases page.
